Wondering where we came up with “Peyton Stakes?” It’s all from our Germantown roots dating back to the 19th century when Balie Peyton sponsored an international horse race at the Burns Island track in Germantown.  In October of 1843, Peyton, who was nationally known for the fine racehorses bred on his farm, held Peyton Stakes - the richest race run anywhere in the world at the time with a purse of $35,000. Burns Island and horse racing survived the Civil War in Nashville, but it closed in 1884 and was replaced by West Side Park three years later. And now, you can call it home.
